Buyers often ask for a certified fabric without saying which certification. GOTS, OCS, GRS, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and BCI each verify something different, so the right one depends on the claim you want to make. Janki Nath & Co. holds all five and supplies certified woven fabric from India with documents for certified orders.
The Five Certifications Compared
| Standard | What it verifies | Covers processing and social criteria | Typical claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| GOTS | Organic fibre content plus environmental and social criteria through processing | Yes | Organic (95%+ organic fibre) or made with organic (70%+) |
| OCS | How much certified organic material is in the final product | No | Organic content claim, including blends |
| GRS | Recycled content, chain of custody and social and environmental practices | Yes | Recycled content claim |
| OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | The finished textile is tested for harmful substances | No (product test) | Tested for harmful substances |
| BCI | Cotton grown by farmers in the Better Cotton programme | No (farm level) | Better Cotton sourcing, not organic |
Which One Do You Need?
You want to label a product as organic
Choose GOTS if you need organic fibre plus environmental and social criteria through processing, or OCS if you only need to prove the organic content. See our organic cotton fabric.
You want to claim recycled content
Choose GRS. It verifies the recycled content and the chain of custody. See our recycled fabric.
You want to show the fabric is safe against skin
Choose OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which tests the finished textile for harmful substances. It does not make the fabric organic.
You want responsible cotton sourcing without the organic claim
BCI supports Better Cotton sourcing at farm level. It is not organic. Read our guide: What is BCI cotton?.
Documents to Ask For
For any certified order, ask the supplier for the current scope or licence certificate and, for each shipment, a transaction certificate that names the products. Check the certified company in the public database of the standard where one exists. We provide certification documents for certified orders. See our certifications page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is OCS the same as GOTS?
No. OCS verifies the amount of organic material in the final product. GOTS covers organic fibre content as well as environmental and social criteria through processing.
Can one fabric carry more than one certification?
Yes, where the yarn, processing and supply chain all meet each standard. Tell us which certifications your order needs and we will confirm what can be certified for the construction.
Which certification do European buyers ask for most?
It depends on the brand and the claim. Organic claims usually point to GOTS or OCS, recycled claims to GRS, and safety to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Ask your buyer which claim they need on the label.
