IKAT is a resist-dyeing technique where yarn is tied and dyed in a specific pattern before weaving. When the yarn is woven, the pattern emerges — with characteristic soft, feathered edges that cannot be replicated by printing.

JNC produces warp IKAT constructions in cotton and viscose at our units in Erode and Salem. Each piece has a hand-crafted quality even in machine production, because the resist-dyeing is done by hand on the yarn before it reaches the loom.
Sections of yarn are tightly bound to prevent dye penetration, then the binding is removed after dyeing to reveal the pattern once woven. The characteristic feathering at pattern edges is a natural result of slight yarn movement during weaving, and it is the quality buyers value in IKAT.
Because each IKAT design depends on how the yarn is bound and dyed, no two metres are exactly alike, which is part of the appeal for artisan and heritage collections. We discuss pattern scale, colour count and the amount of feathering you want at briefing stage, so the fabric matches the look you have in mind.

Garment Weight IKAT
Lightweight cotton and viscose IKAT for dresses, tunics, blouses and resort wear. Popular in boho, ethnic and artisan collections. Available in 2-colour and multi-colour warp IKAT, with natural and reactive dyes available.
Home Furnishing IKAT
IKAT constructions for cushion covers, table runners, napkins and decorative panels. Used widely in boutique hotel and interior design procurement. The distinctive feathered edge of IKAT works particularly well in home textiles where a handmade aesthetic is valued.
What We Offer
Small quantities are welcomed, and custom colourway development is available on existing IKAT designs, with no minimum order lock-in. BCI cotton is used across IKAT constructions. Strike-off samples are available, and development quantities and bulk production are handled from the same facilities.
