Jacquard Fabric: A Complete Guide for Fashion Buyers

    January 24, 2026 · Manan Bhasin

Jacquard fabric is woven on a Jacquard loom — a mechanism that controls individual warp yarns independently, allowing complex patterns to be built directly into the weave structure rather than applied afterward. The pattern is not printed or embroidered — it is structural, which means it cannot fade, crack or peel the way a surface-applied design eventually can, and that durability is a large part of why jacquard commands a premium over printed fabric with a visually similar pattern.

    Types of Jacquard Fabric

Damask is typically single-colour with a reversible satin-and-sateen pattern, used in upholstery and formal wear where a subtle, tonal design is wanted. Brocade is multi-colour, with a raised pattern effect created by supplementary weft threads, used in occasion wear and luxury garments where the pattern is meant to be visually prominent. Matelassé has a quilted or embossed appearance from its double-cloth structure, used in jackets, bags and structured garments. Cutwork jacquard has open, lace-like areas within the weave itself, used in lightweight fashion applications where a delicate, semi-sheer effect is wanted.

What to Check When Sourcing Jacquard

Weave complexity the manufacturer can actually handle — jacquard looms vary significantly in the number of independently controlled harnesses, which directly limits pattern complexity and repeat size. Minimum order quantity for custom patterns, since jacquard requires a specific loom setup per pattern that isn't shared across designs the way a plain-weave setup can be. Repeat size limitations — ask for the maximum pattern repeat the mill's looms can produce before committing to a design. And whether pattern development (translating your design into a weavable jacquard card/file) is done in-house or outsourced, which affects both turnaround time and how iteratively you can revise a pattern during development.
