Linen Manufacturers in India vs Europe vs China

    January 30, 2026 · Manan Bhasin

Linen is manufactured primarily in three regions, and each answers a different sourcing priority: Europe (Belgium, France, Lithuania) for premium long-staple linen backed by centuries of flax-growing and processing heritage; China for volume production at competitive pricing; and India for a middle ground — quality linen and linen blends with strong certification infrastructure and mill-direct pricing that avoids the European price premium.

    European Linen

European linen remains the benchmark for quality, particularly Belgian and French linen sourced from the Normandy/Flanders flax-growing belt, where the climate and soil are specifically suited to long-staple flax. It commands higher cost, longer lead times, and more limited volume capacity than the alternatives — a deliberate trade-off for brands building a luxury or heritage-linen positioning where the European provenance itself is part of the story being told to the end customer.

    Chinese Linen

China offers high-volume linen and linen-blend production at competitive pricing, which makes it a reasonable choice for brands prioritising cost and scale above all else. The trade-off: quality is more variable across suppliers than in the European or Indian markets, and certification infrastructure for organic and sustainability claims is generally weaker — worth factoring in if your brand needs to substantiate a GOTS, OCS or similar claim on the finished garment.

    Indian Linen

Indian linen and linen-blend production has become increasingly competitive on quality, particularly for blended constructions — cotton/linen and viscose/linen — where India's spinning and weaving infrastructure is well developed. The certification infrastructure (GOTS, OCS, BCI) is strong and well established across Indian mills, which matters for brands with sustainability documentation requirements. Pricing is mill-direct without the European heritage premium, positioning India as the practical middle ground between European quality-at-a-price and Chinese volume-at-a-price.
