Dobby vs Jacquard Fabric: Differences, Uses & Cost

    October 21, 2026 · Manan Bhasin

Dobby and jacquard are both patterned woven fabrics, and buyers often confuse them. The difference is how much control the loom has over each warp yarn. Dobby makes small, simple repeating patterns. Jacquard can weave large, detailed designs. Janki Nath & Co. weaves both in India for apparel and home furnishing buyers.

    How Dobby Fabric Is Woven

A dobby loom has a dobby attachment that raises and lowers groups of warp yarns in a set order. Because the control works on groups of yarns, the patterns are small and geometric: dots, diamonds, squares, stripes and textured effects such as birds eye and waffle. The pattern is part of the weave, so it does not print off or wash out.

    How Jacquard Fabric Is Woven

A jacquard loom can control warp yarns individually. That allows large, complex designs that do not need to repeat quickly, such as florals, paisleys, damask and brocade-style patterns. The pattern is woven into the cloth rather than printed on it.

How to Tell Dobby and Jacquard Apart

Look at the pattern scale and repeat. A small repeating texture that reads as surface interest, usually from a shirt or table napkin, is typically dobby. A large motif, an intricate design or a pattern with fine detail, such as a floral or damask, is typically jacquard. Turning the cloth over can also help: jacquard often shows longer yarn floats on the reverse.

    Which One Should You Choose?

Choose dobby when you want subtle premium texture, for example in formal shirting, or when you need a pattern at a practical price and a quicker development time. Choose jacquard when the design itself is the feature, such as a floral dress fabric, a statement home furnishing or a custom pattern based on your own artwork. Many collections use both: dobby for the everyday range and jacquard for the hero pieces.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between dobby and jacquard?

Dobby weaves small geometric patterns by controlling groups of warp yarns. Jacquard controls yarns individually and can weave large, complex designs.

    Is dobby cheaper than jacquard?

Dobby is generally simpler and quicker to develop, so it is usually the more economical patterned weave. Actual cost depends on yarn, construction and quantity.

Can jacquard be used for shirts?

Yes. Lighter jacquard in cotton or blends is used for shirts, dresses and blouses, while heavier jacquard is common in home furnishing and upholstery.

Can you develop a custom dobby or jacquard design?

Yes. We develop custom designs to a buyer brief. Message us on WhatsApp with your end use and reference.
