Upholstery and Home Furnishing Fabric: Sourcing from India

Home furnishing fabric operates to different standards than garment fabric, because it's judged on durability under repeated use rather than drape or hand feel. Understanding the actual test standards a mill should be able to quote helps separate a genuine upholstery-grade supplier from one simply reselling apparel-weight fabric for a furnishing application it wasn't built for.

The Performance Measures That Actually Matter

Martindale rub test measures abrasion resistance by counting rub cycles before visible wear appears — residential upholstery is typically expected to withstand a minimum of 15,000 rubs, contract/commercial upholstery (hotels, offices, hospitality) a minimum of 30,000 rubs. Pilling resistance measures how the fabric surface holds up against the small fibre balls that form with friction over time. Colourfastness to light and to cleaning measures whether the fabric holds its colour under sun exposure and standard cleaning methods without fading or bleeding. Dimensional stability after washing checks that the fabric doesn't shrink or distort once it's been through cleaning, which matters for both loose covers and fixed upholstery applications.

Constructions Used in Upholstery and Home Furnishing

Woven jacquard is used for patterned upholstery where the design needs to be durable and woven-in rather than printed, since upholstery fabric sees far more surface friction than garment fabric. Plain weave and twill are used for solid and textured upholstery where a simpler, more cost-efficient construction is appropriate. Dobby is used for subtle geometric patterns on furnishing fabric, the same structural-pattern logic as dobby shirting applied at a heavier weight. Yarn-dyed fabrics are used for stripes and checks in curtain and drapery applications, since the colour is woven in rather than printed and holds up better to light exposure over the long dwell-time furnishing fabric typically has near windows.

Where Indian Home Furnishing Fabric Is Manufactured

India has a strong manufacturing base for home furnishing fabrics, particularly in cotton, cotton-linen, jacquard and dobby constructions. Panipat (Haryana) is a well-known hub specifically for blankets and flat weaves, while Bhiwandi and Surat (Maharashtra/Gujarat) are established centres for broader furnishing fabric production including jacquard and dobby constructions at the weights upholstery requires.
