Pilling resistance measures how the fabric surface holds up against the small fibre balls that form with friction over time. Colourfastness to light and to cleaning measures whether the fabric holds its colour under sun exposure and standard cleaning methods without fading or bleeding. Dimensional stability after washing checks that the fabric doesn't shrink or distort once it's been through cleaning, which matters for both loose covers and fixed upholstery applications.
Constructions Used in Upholstery and Home Furnishing
Woven jacquard is used for patterned upholstery where the design needs to be durable and woven-in rather than printed, since upholstery fabric sees far more surface friction than garment fabric. Plain weave and twill are used for solid and textured upholstery where a simpler, more cost-efficient construction is appropriate. Dobby is used for subtle geometric patterns on furnishing fabric, the same structural-pattern logic as dobby shirting applied at a heavier weight.
